A big thanks to Rob Slaughter and Chris Adams for putting on a fantastic Bike Skills course at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Ogwr on Sunday 19th January. This was a great introduction to both the theory and practical skills needed for bike handling.
The course was further enhanced by the loan of a very expensive gyroscope from Chris and the culinary skills demonstrated by Rob’s baking.
Well done to those who attended and we hope to see you all out practicing your new skills on the next club ride.
Firstly to new members DO NOT PANIC! Over the course of the next few weeks we are aiming to work out your level of swim fitness, often called your ‘CSS’ pace or ‘Critical Swim Speed’. This is simply timing you over both 200m and 400m distances. We kindly ask if ALL members could try and attend one of our sessions leading up to the Christmas break for your CSS test.
Why are we doing this?…
This is so that so that as we move forward in the new year we can group you with swimmers of a similar pace. Essentially you should be able to sustain your swim pace throughout your training session, we don’t want you blowing up and running out of energy 20 minutes in. Likewise it shouldn’t be easy either!
For novices it is likely that we will be focusing on your technique rather than CSS, so don’t worry.
So what is CSS?…….
If you are still unsure please ask one of our coaches for more information.

We would like to encourage all members to consider helping with the running of the club by applying for one of the above roles. If you are interested in putting your name forward for any of the roles (committee or non committee) we would love to hear from you. Please speak to one of the existing committee members (Lauren Davies, Steve Summers, Dan Morgan or Mike Edwards) who would be happy to discuss the responsibilities and commitment required for undertaking the role. If there is anything you would like to see added to the agenda, please let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Dan Morgan braved the worst conditions ever seen to finish the Gower Ultra 50 mile last weekend. Congratulations Dan!!! The weather was so bad that many athletes didn’t even finish the race. The ultra marathon circumnavigates the Gower peninsula taking in the stunning coastline and inland woodlands. Dan ‘enjoyed’ it so much he’s going back to race the 100 mile ultra next year!!!
Yes folks its that time of year again, so get your Christmas jumpers ready! Jan Jones has very kindly organised a Xmas party for us again this year. It will be at St. Marys Golf Club 7.30pm on Saturday 14th Dec.
£10 deposit is payable ASAP preferably tomorrow at swimming! OR please contact Jan to arrange paying your deposits via bank transfer, with your meal choices (see menu below) and with any other questions.
October got off to a great start with our athletes busy taking part in the Minehead sprint triathlon, Cardiff Half Marathon and Ironman Barcelona.
Taking part in IMB were Steve Bassett, Dave Spry, Nick Hogben and Alex Betts, with Alex finishing in an amazing time of under 10 hours! Alex had already completed a half distance 70.3 ironman in Poland along with Steve Summers and Chris Banner earlier in the summer.
Congratulations to Andy Martin who finished second overall and first in his age group category at the Minehead sprint triathlon!
September was a busy month, as well as a great IRONMAN Wales our athletes took part in Saundersfoot Tri (Tash Andrew, Dave B) and Mumbles Tri where Rich D (placed 5th overall and 3rd in age cat)👏 ,Tom and Siany competed the Wild Wye swim but got a tad sick 🤢
A huge congratulations to everyone who recently participated in Ironman Wales at Tenby – Andrea Garrington, Jan Jones, Kath Iles, James O’Flaherty, Allister Dare-Edwards, Dan Morgan, Ian Gill, Paul Ford, Rob Slaughter and Matt Edwards. What an inspiring bunch of people! Also massive thanks to everyone who turned up to support of which there are too many to name.

We aren’t a competitive bunch of people (yeah right), so to that end a massive well done to Matt Edwards our first male and Kath Isles first lady finisher in Team Pencoed. Kath’s efforts have helped raise over £1,800 towards Diabetes UK. Also a shout out for Jan who completed IMW on her birthday and had her picture tweeted by Lucy Gossage!

Our group of supporters reported that they were “absolutely exhausted” by the shouting, cheering and drinking that occurred on Sunday. We hope you have now all sufficiently recovered.
Finally the weekend saw a nomination for our very own Chairman – Mike Edwards for the Pink Jersey competition (again). Mike was checking the Ironman App to see where James ‘Fluffy’ O’Flaherty was on the bike course only to miss him as he cycled past in HiViz yellow….. classic.
