Chairman & British Triathlon Coach Level 1 – Mike Edwards

Mike has been competing in Triathlon since 2010 and in 2018 obtained his level 1 coaching certificate.  He took part in the inaugural Ironman Wales 2011 event and ever since then he’s been heard saying “I’m never entering another”, despite having entered several more. 2019 will see Mike entering his last! Mike is a great believer in sport’s ability to improve an individuals physical and mental health. He is keen to encourage all abilities to enter the sport of triathlon.

Head Coach & British Triathlon Coach Level 2 – Steve Bassett

Before joining the club, Steve ran marathons in Dublin, Amsterdam and London. Having developed an interest in endurance sports he set his sights on taking part in triathlon; the obvious answer was to join a club. He has been an active member of Pencoed Triathlon since ever since. Steve entered the inaugural Ironman Wales in 2011 and until 2017 had taken part in every subsequent Ironman Wales event. This year he decided he wanted some sunshine so took part in Ironman Vichey instead.

Vice Chairman & Level 1 British Triathlon Coach – Lauren Davies

Lauren joined Pencoed Tri Club in 2016 and shortly after became Vice Chair. Having obtained her level 1 coaching certificate in 2018 she is now working towards Level 2. Lauren regularly participates in sprint, Olympic, middle and full distance triathlons and is keen to encourage more people to enjoy the sport of triathlon

Level 2 British Triathlon Coach – Andrea Garrington

Andrea enjoys taking part in triathlon events from Sprint to Ironman distance. She’s also been known to participate in Swim/Run and Marathon distance Swims events. With an enthusiastic coaching style, she particularly enjoys working with novices, providing the support belief and confidence that “Anything is Possible”.

Level 1 Coach & Level 2 UK Athletics Endurance Coach – Alan Kerr

Alan started triathlon with the club in 2007 and has been a GB age group triathlete since 2008. His preferred distance is sprint because as far as he’s concerned, all the other distances take too long. He has extensive running experience at all distances from 800m to marathon. He is also an experienced endurance coach at Bridgend AC. Alan has had every running injury known to mankind and lived to tell the tale! He is living proof that it’s possible to start as a novice swimmer and still make it onto finishers podium.

Level 1 British Triathlon Coach & Level 1 British Athletics Coach – Andrew Martin

Andrew has been competing in Triathlon since 2012. He has been British Age Group champion and has also competed at domestic elite level. He recently came 5th in his age group in the Triathlon World Championships. Andrew holds two Welsh swimming records for his age group and is an ASA age group Open Water Champion.

Level 1 Coach – Katherine Isles

After being ill with meningitis in 2012, swimming, cycling and running offered Kath a gentle way back to fitness. She took part in her first triathlon in 2013 and joined Pencoed Triathlon Club a few months later. With the club’s support a year later she came first female in a local novice tri (which came as a shock to her!) In 2014 Kath revived the club’s junior triathlon event and was responsible for helping the club to win the Welsh Triathlon award for best Junior Triathlon. In 2015 Kath attained her Level 1 coaching qualification and became the first female coach at the club. Kath has continued to take part in all triathlon distances from sprint to Ironman.

Level 1 Coach – Steve Parker

Although no longer competing Steve has been a coach for 10 years and has over 21 years experience in Triathlon. Steve is also one of the founding members of Pencoed Triathlon Club.

Level 1 Coach – Tom Chapman

Tom has been with the club for five years. Having completed two IM Wales events; nearly getting eaten by a bear at IM Canada, he now seems obsessed with swimming long distances, in cold temperatures, in nothing but speedos. Having completed a couple of 25km swims, Tom recently completed swimming the English channel.
