It was a Cold, Cloudy, Damp and Wet morning on the 5th February 2017 in the Ogmore Valley, where Cwm Ogwr Running Club were hosting the 2nd Annual Event of (THE BEAST) 10k run. The course is a Trail Run that consisted of Stones, Gravel, Mud, Grass and a lot of Sheep mess ha-ha. The event attracted a lot of runners from numerous running clubs making up a total of 187 runners. Among these runners were 11 athletes of Pencoed Tri Club, Nigel Bungay, Joey Howland, Mike Edwards, Daniel Morgan, Damien Crombie, James O’Flaherty, Lauren Davies, Chris Adams, Steven Bassett, Lee Griffiths and James Davies.
At 10:00am all athletes were at the start line ready to take on The Beast. The whistle sounded and we were off. The first part of the race sore us take on 2 segments which were:
1. Rhiwglyn Climb to the Gate – 1.2k Long, 112m Climb at 8.9% Incline.
2. Cemetery Road Climb – 1.1k Long, 111m Climb at 10% Incline.
After climbing these 2 segments we were not far from the top of the mountain where we were welcomed to a nice, Free Falling and Wind Milling action decent for about 1.3k on ankle breaking terrain. When at the bottom of the descent, boy was there a surprise at the bottom corner. It was that time to start the grueling and an absolute leg burner of a climb (THE BEAST) which definitely lives up to its name. After concurring this absolute monster of a hill all athletes were all finally at the top of The Beast out of breath with not much energy left to say hi to the Marshals, but in the distance we were welcomed by much needed refreshments where we could refuel and take on some much needed energy and most importantly get our breath back and go again for the second half of the race.
3. The Beast – 2k Long, 167m Climb at 7.1% Incline
4. Aber School to Top of the Beast – 5k Long, 224m Climb at 4.4% Incline.
Now the hardest part of the race was over, it was time for a bit of fun as all runners could let loose and absolutely let rip as they took on the 1.5k long Decent of (THE BEAST). A lot of Speed, Tears and Wind Milling action were seen on this part of the loose gravel and loose stoned course by the Cwm Ogwr Marshalls, which I must say did a fantastic job through out the race.
5. Beast Decent – 1.5k Long, 151m Decent at -9.4% Decent
Now at the bottom of (THE BEAST) climb we had 1 final climb left to complete and get back to the top of the mountain where the finishing line was almost insight. After that final climb where all athletes legs must have been giving up on them and really hurting we were finally at the top and welcomed with an incredible view of the Ogmore Valley below us. Now it was time to enjoy that final Free Falling run back to the finishing line where our Family, Team Mates, Fellow Club Runners, Marshals and all the great supporters who braved the cold weather to come along and show their support, greeted us all. Now over the finishing line Hurting, Aching and out of breath but with a smile on our faces we can all say that we have concurred (THE BEAST) and will be back again next year.
